ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has commenced a verification exercise at the National Secretariat of the Labour Party in Abuja, in a move aimed at assessing the party’s organisational structure and compliance with regulatory requirements.
The INEC delegation, led by Mansur Hassan, is tasked with verifying the party’s claims regarding its physical and leadership structures, membership records, and the status of its secretariat building.
Speaking before the commencement of the exercise, Hassan clarified the mandate of the team, stressing that their role extends beyond routine observation.
“We are monitors, not observers. We are here to monitor and correct things, not observe,” he stated.

He explained that the exercise would include verification of the party’s executive membership, particularly the National Working Committee, in line with provisions of the party’s constitution.
The team is also expected to scrutinise documents relating to the party’s occupancy of its secretariat, including tenancy agreements, payment receipts, and other relevant records.
In addition, INEC officials will obtain a soft copy of the party’s membership register as part of the process.
The development comes amid ongoing internal engagements within the Labour Party, with indications of moves toward reconciliation among key stakeholders following recent leadership disputes.
The outcome of the verification exercise is expected to provide clarity on the party’s organisational framework, leadership structure, and level of compliance with electoral regulations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
