ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Bauchi State caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been rocked by internal divisions over moves to admit Governor Bala Mohammed into the party, prompting the constitution of a high-powered committee to manage the crisis.
The cracks within the caucus became evident during a meeting held in Abuja, where members expressed sharply differing views on the political and structural implications of the governor’s proposed defection.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, acting Secretary of the caucus, Rep. Dabo Ismail, said the newly formed committee has been mandated to articulate and present the caucus’ demands and conditions to the party’s national leadership in the event of any defection.
He explained that the committee would also engage critical stakeholders to ensure a smooth and inclusive negotiation process, represent the caucus in all discussions relating to possible defections from the PDP-led government, and provide periodic updates to members.

Despite the disagreements, Ismail maintained that the governor remains welcome in the APC but stressed the need for due consultation with stakeholders at the state level.
“The governor is welcomed to join the party, but we urge the National Leadership of the party to carry stakeholders at the state along in the negotiations,” he said.
He described the move to set up the committee as a “democratic mechanism” aimed at accommodating divergent opinions while preserving party unity.
Also speaking, the senator representing Bauchi North Senatorial District and Chairman of the Bauchi APC caucus, Senator Sama’ila Dahuwa, voiced strong dissatisfaction over what he described as the failure of the party’s national leadership to consult state stakeholders on such a critical matter.
According to him, sidelining key actors at the state level undermines the principles of internal democracy, inclusiveness, and respect for established party structures.
“The omission is unacceptable,” the caucus declared, warning against the imposition of decisions without broad-based engagement.
The caucus further disclosed that the committee comprises top-ranking party figures, including a serving minister, former governors, and two senators.

It also resolved to formally communicate its grievances and position to the APC national leadership, insisting on strict adherence to due process and internal consultation.
The caucus warned that poorly managed integration of new entrants could alienate loyal party members and weaken cohesion within the party.
Governor Bala Mohammed had earlier, on March 31, revealed plans to defect to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid ongoing political realignments ahead of future elections.
His moves gained further traction following a recent closed-door meeting at the Bauchi Government House involving APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf.
