LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Renowned Nigerian designer Oluwaseyi Adekunle, popularly known as Seyi Vodi, has shared candid information about his humble beginnings, revealing how a modest NYSC allowance became the foundation of a thriving luxury fashion empire.
In a recent interview, the Abuja-based entrepreneur shared that his first real income came during his service year as a National Youth Service Corps member.
At the time, corpers’ monthly allowance increased from N1,000 to N3,600, a small sum that would later shape his business journey.
Rather than spending like many of his peers, Seyi Vodi said he chose a different path. While others bought clothes from Abba Market, he focused on saving and investing the money into something bigger.
That early decision, he explained, set him apart and marked the beginning of his entrepreneurial mindset.
He traced this mindset back even further to his childhood, recalling how he sold sachet water in the barracks.
Those early experiences taught him how to grow small earnings into sustainable income.

“I’ve been paid 500 naira, where a single Individual has offered me $300,000 to render service,” he stated.
At the start of his career, the designer revealed he charged as little as N500 to sew an outfit. However, years of consistency, strong branding, and smart positioning have dramatically changed his fortune.
Today, Seyi Vodi commands premium rates, working with elite clients willing to pay top dollar for a piece of his design.
“I now earn $300,000 (N400M) just to sew a single cloth,” he stated.

The fashion designer emphasized his belief in the global value of fashion.
He noted that in Western countries, top designers often earn more than politicians, a standard he believes is possible in Nigeria with the right approach.
Over time, he has built a powerful reputation among high-profile clients, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, music stars like Davido and Burna Boy, as well as figures such as Richard Mofe-Damijo and Ayo Makun.
Born in Osun State, the designer studied Geology at the University of Maiduguri before venturing fully into fashion.
His contributions to the industry have earned him national recognition, including the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honor.
In 2025, he marked his 50th birthday with a bold statement of success, gifting himself a luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan reportedly worth about N1 billion, which he flew into Nigeria via private jet.
He added that he hopes that his journey from small beginnings to global success reflects a story of discipline, vision, and long-term strategy among the next generation of fashion entrepreneurs and hardworking individuals.
