ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Opposition leaders, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday joined scores of Nigerians in Abuja for a mass protest demanding the protection of the country’s democratic system.
The protest, tagged “Save Democracy,” is currently taking place in the Federal Capital Territory amid growing concerns that Nigeria may be drifting toward a one-party state.
Demonstrators converged on the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where they voiced strong opposition to recent political developments and decisions by the electoral body.
Many of the protesters were dressed in branded “Operation Save Our Democracy” T-shirts, while others displayed red and white placards bearing various inscriptions calling for electoral fairness and institutional accountability.

Videos circulating online captured scenes of high energy at the protest ground, with participants chanting solidarity songs, including the popular refrain, “We no go gree.” Some protesters also raised chants demanding the removal of the INEC Chairman, shouting, “INEC Chairman Amupitan must go.”
The demonstration comes on the heels of a controversial move by INEC last week, in which it derecognised the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by David Mark.
The decision has further deepened the crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently witnessed multiple factions laying claim to its leadership.
The presence of top opposition figures at the protest underscores rising political tension and signals a coordinated pushback against what critics describe as attempts to weaken Nigeria’s multi-party democratic structure.
As of press time, the protest remains ongoing, with more participants expected to join.
