ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Suspected terrorists have attacked two churches in Ariko community, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, killing at least seven persons and abducting several others during Easter celebrations.
The early morning assault on Sunday threw the community into panic, as gunmen reportedly stormed the area in large numbers, targeting worshippers during church services.
The councillor representing Awon Ward, Mark Bawa, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, noting that the affected worship centres were First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church, both located in Ariko.
“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources said seven persons were killed, while others claimed eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” Bawa said.
He disclosed that poor telecommunications coverage may have contributed to the scale of the attack, as it delayed response efforts.
“The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting sporadically at worshippers. Several people were killed, and many others were taken away into the bush,” he stated.

Residents said the assailants operated for an extended period without resistance, heightening fears over the vulnerability of rural communities in the area.
The latest incident comes barely two months after a similar attack in Kurmin Wali community, also in Kachia LGA, where several worshippers were abducted during a church gathering in February 2026.
That attack had sparked outrage and renewed calls for improved security presence across Southern Kaduna.
When contacted, the Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, said further details would be provided as investigations continue.
Observers say the recurring assaults underscore persistent security challenges facing rural communities in Southern Kaduna, particularly during religious gatherings and festive periods.
More details are expected as authorities assess the full scale of the attack.
