ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Police Command in Ondo State says it has disrupted a cult gathering and arrested five alleged cultists in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South-West Local Government of the state.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, who made this known in a statement on Sunday in Akure, said the arrest was carried out by the command’s Special Anti-Cultism Squad (SACS).

Jimoh explained that on March 27, the command received credible and actionable intelligence from vigilant members of the public indicating that a group of individuals suspected to be cultists were converging at a residential building.

According to him, the following individuals were arrested at the scene: Adesuye Dare ‘M’, Ayeerun Joshua ‘M’, Ojo Omole ‘M’, Adu Dele ‘M’, and Akeju Idowu ‘M’.

“The suspects were reportedly engaged in a secret meeting, during which they were chanting cult-related slogans and exhibiting behaviors consistent with cult activities, thereby raising serious concerns about public safety.

“Acting swiftly on the intelligence, a team of operatives from SACS was immediately mobilised to the location. Upon arrival, the operatives tactically cordoned off the area and successfully apprehended the suspects.

“Preliminary investigation reveals that the suspects are members of the notorious Eiye Confraternity, a secret cult group associated with violent crimes, unlawful gatherings, and threats to public peace and order.

“The suspects are currently in police custody and have made useful statements that are aiding the investigation.

“Efforts are also ongoing to deepen the investigation with a view to uncovering the broader network of the group, identifying additional members, and preventing any planned criminal activities linked to the syndicate,” he said.

The spokesperson said the Commissioner of Police (CP) in the state, Adebowale Lawal, commended the prompt and professional response of the operatives involved in the operation.

According to Jimoh, Lawal also commended members of the public whose timely information made the success possible, and emphasised that community partnership remains a critical component in effective policing and crime prevention.

He also said the CP further reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance against cultism and all forms of criminality,

“This command will continue to intensify intelligence-driven operations across the state to ensure the safety and security of all residents.

“Members of the public, particularly youths, are strongly advised to steer clear of cult-related activities and associations, as the consequences are severe and far-reaching.

“Parents and guardians are equally encouraged to monitor their wards and guide them against involvement in unlawful groups.

“The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of the investigation. Be assured that justice will be pursued to its logical conclusion.

“Residents are urged to remain vigilant and continue to provide useful information to the police, with the assurance that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality,” the spokesperson said.
