LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- New findings have uncovered the true cause of Afrofuji star Destiny Boy’s sudden death, ending months of speculation and raising fresh concerns about substance use in Nigeria’s music scene.

The 22-year-old fast-rising artist born Afeez Adesina died on January 17, 2026, under unclear circumstances that quickly sparked outrage and widespread debate across social media.

Although friends and family of the late singer ascribed his death to spiritual causes, explaining that he had been dealing with a long-term illness that caused seizures, a newly released autopsy report published by Daily Trust revealed what really led to his passing.

According to details from the Ogun State Police Command, investigators from the Homicide Section carried out an autopsy, which found dangerous levels of tramadol, its metabolites, and methamphetamine in his system. The report concluded that he died from aspiration pneumonitis caused by ingesting these toxic substances.

Police spokesperson DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, confirmed the development, stating that one suspect has already been arrested while investigations continue.

The young star rose to fame in 2019 after his Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song ‘If’ went viral. He went on to do more Afrofuji styled covers to songs by top Nigerian stars like Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, and Small Doctor. He also built his own catalogue with tracks such as Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, and many more.

At the time of his death, he was a father of one, to a son whom he welcomed with his partner Iremide, in November 2024.

The autopsy findings now put an end to months of uncertainty, offering clarity on the loss of one of Nigeria’s promising young talents while leaving fans discussing on the risks surrounding substance use in the entertainment industry.
