LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- As Christians mark Good Friday and prepare for the Easter celebrations, the Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan, His Grace, Most Rev. Gabriel Abegunrin, has encouraged Nigerian youths to remain hopeful, embrace faith, and rise above economic and social struggles.
Speaking in Ibadan, the cleric urged youths not to lose hope despite the many challenges they face, including rising education costs, unemployment, and low wages.
He encouraged them to stay grounded in their faith and remain connected to God and the Church, describing spirituality as a source of strength during difficult times.
“Keep hope alive. Stay close to God, stay close to your Church, and it shall be well. Arise and make your mark: this is the time for you to rise and make your presence felt in the world and in the Church, bring life to the Church with your energy and zeal for God; become ambassadors of Jesus,” he said.
While acknowledging the harsh realities confronting many young people, Abegunrin warned against turning to harmful behaviours as a way of coping. He advised them to prioritize faith and key into the opportunities around them.

“Education is no longer cheap, even after graduation, work is scarce and when you get work, the salary is not enough. These harsh realities should not lead you to bad habits, Nigeria is the land of opportunities and Easter is the good news that new life is possible, if we live for God. Prioritize your faith: do not be too busy as to abandon God, because it is God alone that can give your life meaning. With your education and skills, you can make Nigeria great again,” the Catholic Archbishop urged the youths.
In addition, Rev. Abegunrin used the Easter period to call on Nigerian leaders to take concrete steps toward improving security and governance.
He stressed the need for safety, freedom of movement, and credible elections across the country.
He also cautioned against the misuse of security agencies, urging authorities to ensure they are used to protect citizens rather than intimidate them.
“There is much concern on security, we call on our governments, Federal and States, Oyo State that is dear to us, to bring an end to these killings, destruction and displacement of people from their homes. Security apparatus must be employed to uproot banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence preventing people from living normal life. We too should not just cry and fold our hands, let’s plan how to support ourselves and be liberated; God help us,” he added.
Notably, Abegunrin encouraged Nigerians to show compassion and support one another, especially during the Easter season, urging both individuals and leaders to play their part in building a more peaceful and supportive society.
“As Christ has made today good for us, it’s our obligation to also make it good for others. Help people overcome their pains and hardship; let us make life good for our neighbour. It doesn’t just have to be Friday that is Good Friday, let it be every day; we can do it by God’s grace,” the Archbishop concluded.
