LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Grammy-winning singer Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has revealed what she truly wants in marriage and her ideal life partner, emphasizing faith, accountability, and personal growth over fleeting emotions.
During a recent sit-down with media personality Angie Martinez, the “Free Fall” hitmaker offered her perspective on the issue, challenging conventional ideas of romance. Tems stressed that in marriage, love alone is never enough, instead, the union should serve as a path toward personal growth.
According to the singer, her ideal partner must be deeply rooted in faith, describing a God-fearing man who could easily sustain genuine love even as years pass.
She questioned how possible it is for a man to commit without accountability, suggesting that devotion becomes fragile when it is not anchored in something greater.
“My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?” she said.
Furthermore, Tems explained that the unpredictable nature of marriage makes accountability and compatibility even more important.
In her view, a partner who lacks a sense of higher responsibility may struggle with consistency, especially during challenging moments.
She noted that relationships inevitably face trials, and without a strong moral compass, it becomes easier for one person to walk away.

The “Raindance” singer highlighted that marriage is challenging and not just an idea of rosy days and flowers.
She encouraged people to focus on the growth and staying strong, noting that marriage is not meant to be easy but a journey that should bring out the best in people.
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,” she stated.
