LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- American RnB singer Brandy Rayana Norwood, known professionally as Brandy, has revisited her early romance with Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris, revealing that their relationship began when she was just a teenager while he was 22.

Writing in her newly published memoir Phases, the Grammy-winning singer who gained global recognition for her chart topping song “The Boy Is Mine” reflected on her late-1990s involvement with Wanya Morris, describing it as deeply formative but ultimately troubling given their six-year age gap at the time.

Brandy explained that the relationship began quietly during her rise to fame while they collaborated on her early music, including the track “Brokenhearted.”

According to her, what started as mentorship soon evolved into something more intimate, but carefully hidden from her own family and the public.

“I was in over my head… We would pretend patience and claim we were waiting until my eighteenth birthday before pursuing any romantic connection,” Brandy wrote, recalling how the secrecy became part of their lives and their relationship an “elaborate fiction.”

The “Come A Little Closer” hitmaker explained that the secrecy showed they both understood the risks of the relationship, but she chose to ignore the warning signs at the time. However, looking back Brandy admits she “knew full well that what was happening was wrong,” but believed it was real love.

She recalled sneaking around and even lying to her parents to keep the relationship hidden, despite the growing suspicion at home.

The music star stated that as her career took off, things between her and Morris became more complicated.

She points to moments she now sees as red flags, his comparisons to other singers like Mariah Carey, his distance, and the control he seemed to have over her.

Eventually, their relationship fell apart after she discovered he had been unfaithful with multiple women, including his assistant.

In the years that followed, Morris publicly downplayed the romance as a “schoolgirl crush,” but Brandy strongly disagreed in her book.

“I believe he took advantage,” she wrote, adding that she now sees the relationship as a “calculated courtship” by an older man who understood the power he had.

Reflecting on how deeply the experience affected her, she added, “The shame I have carried over this relationship ends here.”

She now criticizes what she described as his attempts to rewrite the past while calling it a form “of continued abuse.”

The award winning singer also revealed that her 1998 album ‘Never Say Never’ was inspired in part by the relationship and her struggle to recognize her own worth.

Now, the 47-year-old artist says revisiting that chapter is about honesty and closure, as she continues to move forward in her career.
