ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The United States is weighing a major military escalation in the Middle East, with plans under consideration to deploy up to 10,000 additional troops to the region amid rising tensions with Iran, according to multiple US media reports.
The proposed deployment, which could significantly expand Washington’s military footprint, is seen as part of efforts to provide Donald Trump with broader strategic options as the conflict deepens following US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the troop surge would strengthen US readiness in a region already on edge, even as Trump continues to insist that diplomatic efforts with Tehran are progressing.
The additional forces would join thousands of paratroopers and Marines already deployed, positioning US troops within striking distance of key Iranian targets, including Kharg Island, a critical oil export hub.
Despite the buildup, Trump has repeatedly ruled out immediate plans for a ground invasion.
However, signals from Tehran suggest a wider conflict could be triggered if that position changes.

An Iranian official warned that any US ground incursion would prompt retaliation through allied forces, including Houthi fighters in Yemen targeting shipping routes in the Red Sea, raising fears of a broader regional crisis with global economic implications.
The Pentagon has yet to officially comment on the reported troop plans.
In a parallel development, Trump said he had delayed a deadline for potential strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure, describing ongoing talks as “going very well,” even as military preparations continue.
Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces confirmed carrying out “a wide-scale wave of strikes” on Iranian infrastructure in Tehran, underscoring the volatile and rapidly evolving nature of the conflict.
With diplomacy and military positioning unfolding side by side, the situation is increasingly shaping into a high-stakes geopolitical standoff, one that could redefine security dynamics across the Middle East and beyond.
