LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, famously known as Papa Ajasco, has revealed his earnings from the iconic role that made him a household name.
In a candid discussion with media personality Lucky Udu, Ayoyinka revealed the per-episode payments for the beloved comedy series created by Wale Adenuga. Reflecting on the early days of the show, which launched around 1997, Ayoyinka recalled, “When it started, I earned N2,500. It increased from N2,500 to N3,000 to N5,000 then N25,000 over the years and N45,000 to N60,000 in 2026.”
Despite the gradual rise in pay, he noted that the overall payment structure has remained largely consistent. The actor explained that the series typically produces 12 to 13 episodes per year, meaning actors receive payment only for episodes that are actually recorded.
“Just take for instance, they are paying me about ₦45,000 per episode… sometimes ₦60,000 per episode now,” he added.

While the role brought him widespread fame, Ayoyinka admitted that the character comes with its own limitations. Papa Ajasco is officially registered under Wale Adenuga, restricting Ayoyinka from using the name, costume, or character identity for other commercial ventures without permission.
He explained that the legal backing has hindered opportunities for endorsements and appearances.
“That character is a very strong character. Anyone that wants to use me outside wants me as Papa Ajasco, but I cannot use the name or costume without permission,” he said.
Despite decades of prominence on Nigerian television, Ayoyinka disclosed that financial stability has remained elusive. Having retired about five years ago after working with the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, he shared the personal challenges he continues to face.
“I don’t have a car of my own. I don’t have a house of my own,” he revealed.
