LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Veteran Nollywood actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, aka Papa Ajasco, has revealed the personal and professional struggles tied to the iconic role, addressing how trademark restrictions have limited his opportunities despite decades of fame.
For many Nigerians, the image of the bald-headed, comedic patriarch Papa Ajasco, instantly recalls laughter from the beloved Wale Adenuga Productions (WAP) television series, Papa Ajasco & Company. However, the actor behind the character said the fame came with unexpected challenges that continue to affect his livelihood.
During an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, the veteran performer revealed that the character’s trademark ownership prevented him from cashing out on the widespread recognition he enjoys among fans.
According to Ayoyinka, the character Papa Ajasco is legally registered by the production company run by Wale Adenuga, meaning he cannot freely use the identity outside the show’s official projects or without permission.

“The major problem is that particular character has been registered by Wale Adenuga. Anybody that wants to use me outside wants me with the character, with everything that I have, but it has never been easy for me,” he said.
Furthermore, the actor explained that he does not possess the rights to use the name or even the shirt, tie, and wrapper costume associated with the role without approval.
“I don’t have the right. I can’t use the name Papa Ajasco unless I go and take permission. I can’t even use the costume,” he said.
The situation has also stalled potential endorsement deals. Companies interested in working with him wanted the character as a whole, something he legally cannot do without authorization.
“Because that character is very strong, they want to see me as Papa, dress like Papa, look like Papa. It is always difficult for me to do it,” he added.
The veteran actor also spoke about the personal difficulties he has faced in recent years. He disclosed that he previously worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.
However, his retirement and decades in the TV industry did not bring financial comfort.
“Things have never been okay for years now. I retired five years ago, and it has never been easy for me to move around and connect with people. I’m always thinking every day. Look at my home, I don’t have my own house. I don’t have a car,” he added.
Ayoyinka rose to national prominence through Papa Ajasco & Company, the long-running comedy produced by WAP TV that became a staple of Nigerian television for years. The company was also responsible for other fan favorites
like Binta and Friends, This Life, Odd World, and many more.
