Although details of discussions held during the high-level security meeting was not known, a sources indicated that the talks were likely connected to the recent surge in terrorist attacks and renewed assaults on military formations, particularly in Nigeria’s North-East.
The attacks have reportedly led to the deaths of several senior military officers and heightened concerns about the activities of insurgent groups operating in the region.
On Monday, a commanding officer of the Nigerian Army was killed when suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) attacked a military base in Kukawa, Borno State.
The incident came about a week after suspected members of Boko Haram and ISWAP attempted to overrun military positions in Ngoshe, located in Gwoza Local Government Area of the state.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, Nigerian troops repelled an early-morning assault by suspected ISWAP fighters on a military base in Doron Baga, also situated in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno.
The renewed wave of attacks has raised fresh concerns over the persistence of insurgency in the North-East despite years of military operations aimed at curbing terrorist activities in the region.
