ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday inaugurated electrification projects in the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa communities of Badagry West Local Council Development Area, aimed at enhancing electricity supply to thousands of households and businesses along the corridor.
Sanwo-Olu was represented at the event by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, during the unveiling of the projects carried out by the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.
Addressing residents at the ceremony, Hamzat stated that the electrification initiative would greatly improve power distribution within the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor, describing it as a significant achievement for the Badagry West LCDA community.
He said, “The electrification works we are commissioning today will significantly strengthen power distribution across the Gbaji–Seme and Owode–Apa corridor, and thousands of homes, shops and businesses will now benefit from improved and more stable electricity supply.
“We are not simply commissioning power infrastructure; we are restoring confidence, unlocking opportunity, and bringing lasting relief to communities that have waited patiently for improved electricity supply.
“Badagry occupies a unique place in the story of Lagos State. It is not only a historic town of immense cultural significance; it is also one of the most important gateways into our state and our country.”

He further noted that the Badagry corridor holds strong economic prospects for trade, commerce and cross-border business activities, given its position as a gateway to the Republic of Benin and the broader West African sub-region.
“For that potential to be fully realised, communities must have access to reliable infrastructure, and electricity is one of the most critical of them all,” he added.
According to him, the project aligns with the administration’s THEMES+ Development Agenda, “particularly our commitment to expanding energy access and building resilient infrastructure that supports economic growth across every part of Lagos State.”
He also explained that with the recent inauguration of the board of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Lagos is positioning itself to better regulate and expand electricity supply within the state.
The governor noted that the project would open up new opportunities for residents and businesses in the affected communities.
“What this project truly represents is opportunity for traders to extend their business hours, for artisans and small manufacturers to increase productivity, for schools and healthcare facilities to function more effectively, and for families to enjoy a better quality of life,” he said.
He commended both the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Lagos State Electrification Agency for their dedication and professionalism in executing the project.
“I also appreciate the continued support of the Lagos State House of Assembly and the honourable members representing Badagry Constituencies I and II for their advocacy on behalf of their communities,” he added.
Sanwo-Olu also congratulated residents of Gbaji, Seme, Owode, Apa and neighbouring communities, as well as the people of Badagry, on the development.
He urged them to collectively safeguard the project and protect it from acts of vandalism.
