ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has constituted a special reconciliation committee aimed at resolving the party’s lingering leadership crisis and restoring internal unity.

The decision was announced in a communiqué issued on Wednesday in Abuja after the board concluded a two-day expanded emergency meeting presided over by its chairman, Adolphus Wabara.

According to the communiqué, the committee will interface with the party’s legal team and other stakeholders to address disputes arising from the March 9 judgment of the Court of Appeal of Nigeria.

The board said the move was necessary to stabilise the party and ensure it remains positioned to field candidates in future elections.

The appellate court had nullified the party’s November 2025 national convention which produced the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC), thereby intensifying the leadership tussle within the opposition party.

Although the PDP Board of Trustees expressed disagreement with the court’s ruling, it stated that the party was awaiting formal legal advice from its lawyers on the next course of action.

The board also expressed concern over what it described as avoidable internal disputes and prolonged litigation that have deepened divisions within the party.

“The board, however, acknowledges and resolves to explore the window provided by the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, for reconciliation within the party.

“The BoT is conscious of the interests and aspirations of our members who are desirous of contesting various positions in the 2027 general elections.

“As the conscience and third-highest leadership organ of the party, the board is resolved to take immediate steps to reconcile all stakeholders, end all disputes, and restore the party to good political health,” the communiqué stated.

The board also commended party members across the country for their continued loyalty, citing the ongoing nationwide electronic registration exercise.

According to the communiqué, field reports indicate a steady rise in membership, with Nigerians joining the party in large numbers despite the internal challenges.

“The unprecedented surge to our party, in spite of the challenges, underscores the standing of the PDP as the party of choice for the majority of Nigerians ahead of the 2027 elections,” the board said.

The BoT therefore urged all leaders and members of the party to set aside personal and group interests and unite in order to strengthen the party ahead of future political contests.

As part of decisions reached at the meeting, the board also announced the unanimous appointment of Babangida Aliyu as Secretary of the Board in line with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

The board further commended Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, and Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, for what it described as their commitment and steadfast support toward the stability of the party.

It also urged Nigerians to remain hopeful, assuring that the PDP was working towards repositioning itself to provide leadership capable of “rescuing the nation.”
