LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)– Nigerian Afrobeats star Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, popularly known as Ayra Starr, has shared the emotional story behind her new single “Where Do We Go,” revealing that the song was inspired by a painful secret situationship that ultimately forced her to confront the future of a relationship going nowhere.
While promoting her newly released single “Where Do We Go” on Angela Yee’s Way Up podcast, the Afrobeats star shared that the track emerged from the emotional fallout of a complicated past relationship.
The “Rush” crooner revealed that the romance was kept completely private, describing it as an unhealthy situationship known only to the two people involved. According to the singer, the secrecy of the relationship made it even more emotionally difficult to navigate. Although her close friends urged her to walk away, she admitted that her deep attachment kept drawing her back.
“It was a secret, unhealthy situationship, no one knew except us. My friends kept telling me to end it, but I loved him and kept going back because we had a real friendship,” she said during the conversation.

However, the relationship eventually reached a breaking point. Reflecting on that period, the singer explained that the connection lacked a clear future, leaving her to question what direction the relationship was heading.
That emotional uncertainty ultimately became the foundation for the new song. Writing “Where Do We Go” allowed her to release bottled-up emotions and process the painful experience through music.
“It wasn’t going anywhere, so I started asking myself: where do we go from here? I wanted it private, but at the same time, I wanted him to fight for me,” she shared, describing the track as a form of emotional “trauma-dump.”
Meanwhile, the revelation has sparked speculation among fans online. Because of her well-known friendship with fellow Mavin signee Rema, some listeners have wondered whether he could be the mystery man behind the story.
Ayra Starr has not confirmed the identity of the person who inspired the song, leaving the narrative open to ambiguous interpretation.
