LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)– Atlantis Pediatric Hospital has addressed the interim suspension of its Chief Medical Director following a medical negligence investigation linked to the death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 21-month-old child.
Following the high profile case this is still under review at the Lagos State Coroner’s Court, the Medical and Dental Practitioners Investigation Panel ordered the interim suspension of Atlantis’s Chief Medical Director, Atinuke Uwajeh, amid an ongoing investigation into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege.
The panel’s action also affected other medical professionals, including the Medical Director of Euracare Multi‑Specialist Hospital, Tunde Majekodunmi, alongside the hospital’s anesthesiologist, Titus Ogundare.
Meanwhile, Atlantis Pediatric Hospital confirmed it received an official letter dated February 25, 2026, notifying the facility about Uwajeh’s interim suspension. According to the hospital, the communication was delivered on March 5.
In its response, the hospital acknowledged the development but maintained confidence in the conduct of its medical staff. Hospital management further stated that its doctors acted within acceptable medical standards while attending to patients.
“As a healthcare institution dedicated to pediatric care, Atlantis Pediatric Hospital remains steadfast in its commitment to the highest standards of medical practice, patient safety and professional responsibility. We are confident that all our medical professionals exercised reasonable duty of care and judgment in the discharge of their duties and this will be established in due course,” the statement read.

Attention surrounding the case intensified after the death of the toddler sparked investigations across multiple medical institutions. The matter is currently being examined by the Lagos State Coroner’s Court, where a coroner’s inquest is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Given the ongoing legal proceedings, the hospital said it would refrain from detailed public commentary for now.
“Due to the pendency of this matter before the court and out of respect for judicial integrity and process, our hospital will exercise restraint in making any public commentary on matters that are currently before a court of law,” the statement added.
However, the institution pledged full cooperation with investigators and any lawful inquiry aimed at uncovering the facts.
The case has also drawn regulatory scrutiny after information surfaced through a petition linked to the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA). The petition reportedly relates to Atlantis Pediatric Hospital’s role in referring the child to Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital for further medical care. Therefore, authorities are currently examining the referral process while reviewing allegations that negligence may have occurred during medical procedures at the receiving facility.
Notably, management at Atlantis Pediatric Hospital extended condolences to the grieving family, describing the loss of the child as deeply painful. The hospital added that it will continue cooperating with health regulators while upholding professional standards in pediatric care across its services.
