LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- A deadly tornado outbreak in the US Midwest has left communities grieving after powerful storms tore through parts of Michigan, killing at least four people and injuring several others.
Authorities say the destructive weather system struck late Friday, prompting emergency response efforts across the affected counties. Local officials reported that one of the most devastating impacts occurred near Union City, Michigan, where a tornado caused significant damage and claimed three lives.
According to the Branch County Sheriff’s Office, at least a dozen residents were injured in the same incident.
“Our thoughts are with those who have lost family, friends, and property during this incident,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement to local media.

Meanwhile, about 50 miles west in Cass County, Michigan, another tornado struck residential areas, leaving one person dead and several others hurt. Emergency officials reported widespread destruction, including fallen trees blocking roads and damaging buildings.
Authorities also said the severe weather disrupted power supply for hundreds of residents, leaving more than 500 people without electricity in the aftermath of the storm.
In response to the disaster, emergency personnel began surveying the damage across the affected communities. Officials indicated that teams would continue evaluating the situation to determine the full scale of destruction.
“Emergency Management personnel will be conducting damage assessments in the affected area as required by the State of Michigan,” the local sheriff’s office said in an emergency alert.
Consequently, state authorities quickly mobilized resources as the situation unfolded. Governor Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, announced the activation of the state’s emergency operations centre to coordinate rescue and relief efforts across southwestern Michigan.
“I want to thank all the first responders on the ground who reacted quickly to keep Michiganders safe,” Whitmer wrote in a post on X.
The storms have left many residents shaken while emergency crews continue clearing debris and assisting affected families. Recovery operations are expected to continue in the coming days as officials assess the full impact of the disaster and work to restore services across the region.
