LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Veteran Nollywood icon Pete Edochie has voiced deep frustration over Nigeria’s worsening electricity crisis, revealing he spends ₦40,000 every day to keep his home powered while questioning the silence surrounding the struggles of ordinary citizens.
During a recent interview with African Independent Television (AIT), the 78-year-old film icon detailed the breakdown of his daily energy costs. According to him, the amount includes ₦10,000 for electricity units purchased from the national distribution company, ₦20,000 for diesel to run a generator, plus another ₦10,000 for fueling a petrol generator.
“On the whole, I spend forty thousand every single day on light. It disturbs me a big deal. Then I listen to people who are only interested in getting into politics and enjoying power,” Pete Edochie lamented.

Beyond the financial strain, the respected actor raised concerns about the wider impact of the energy crisis on everyday Nigerians. He questioned whether anyone truly advocates for citizens who lack the influence or platform to speak out.
“Nobody seems to be bothered. Who is really fighting for the common man?” he asked.
His remarks arrive at a time when public frustration with electricity supply continues to grow. Across social media platforms, many Nigerians report experiencing severe power shortages despite paying higher tariffs, with others sharing experiences of “no light” at all.
Reportedly, customers categorized under the government’s Band A power scheme who are theoretically promised up to 22 hours of electricity often report receiving barely five hours of supply daily. The gap between policy promises and actual delivery continues to spark debate about the effectiveness of the country’s tiered power system and the constant collapse of the national grid.
