ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development following Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
His resignation, dated March 2, 2026, comes days after Fintiri formally announced his move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling APC, a decision that reshaped the political landscape in the state.
In a letter addressed to the governor, Adamu said his decision followed “deep personal reflection and careful consideration,” adding that it took immediate effect.
He described his time in office as a privilege, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve in the administration and contribute to infrastructure development in Adamawa.
“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your leadership and to contribute, in my modest capacity, to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” he wrote.
Adamu also thanked the people of Adamawa for their support during his tenure and prayed for continued guidance for the governor.

Before stepping down, Adamu had opted not to join the APC. He was absent when 22 commissioners accompanied Governor Fintiri to publicly declare their defection on February 27.
His decision to resign rather than cross over underscores emerging political fault lines within the state’s leadership following the governor’s switch.
While Adamu did not explicitly link his resignation to the defection, the timing has fueled speculation about internal disagreements over the political realignment.
The development adds a fresh dimension to the shifting alliances ahead of future electoral contests, particularly given his family’s longstanding ties to the PDP at the national level.
