ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to reconsider the dates fixed for the 2027 general elections, citing concerns over their coincidence with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
INEC recently announced February 20 and March 6, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and the governorship and state assembly elections, respectively.
Reacting to the development, Ahmad described his position as a respectful observation, noting that both dates fall within Ramadan, a period when many Muslims devote themselves to fasting, prayer and increased spiritual activities.
He argued that scheduling a nationwide exercise of such magnitude during Ramadan could pose participation challenges for Muslim voters who may scale down strenuous activities during the period.
According to him, adjusting the timetable could promote broader inclusion, considering Nigeria’s sizeable Muslim population.

Ahmad expressed hope that the electoral body would consider the appeal in the spirit of fairness, inclusiveness and national cohesion as preparations for the 2027 elections gather momentum.
