LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Hollywood is mourning the loss of 1990s icon James Van Der Beek, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 11, at the age of 48.
The actor, universally recognized as Dawson Leery from the hit teen drama Dawson’s Creek, had been privately battling stage three bowel cancer since late 2023. In a poignant statement shared via Instagram, his family confirmed the news, stating, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace.”
The father of six first went public with his diagnosis in November 2024, revealing that he initially ignored subtle changes in his bowel movements by simply cutting out coffee. It was only after a formal screening that doctors discovered the colorectal cancer had already spread to his lymph nodes.
Reflecting on the emotional toll of the disease, Van Der Beek told Business Insider that his lowest point was the fear of losing his identity as a provider.

“All these beautiful things that I love—a father, a provider, a husband—all that got taken away… I had to sit there and say, ‘Well, what am I?’ and it was, ‘I’m still worthy of love,’” he shared.
Throughout his final years, Van Der Beek transformed his personal struggle into a mission for public health, actively raising awareness for early cancer screenings. Despite the grueling nature of his treatment, he continued to work, recently guest-starring in the Prime Video comedy Overcompensating.
His castmates from Dawson’s Creek, including Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams, recently honored him during a September charity reunion for “F Cancer,” where Lin-Manuel Miranda stepped in to read his iconic role.
Beyond his career-defining work alongside Joshua Jackson and Busy Philipps, Van Der Beek enjoyed a versatile career with roles in the cult classic Varsity Blues and a hilarious fictionalized version of himself in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23.
Though he famously admitted to ABC News that he originally dreamed of being an athlete rather than an actor, he became one of the most defining faces of a generation, eventually competing on Dancing with the Stars in 2019.
The entertainment industry remains in shock as tributes pour in for the actor who turned his private pain into a magic opportunity to save others from a similar fate.
