ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, is set to confer a prominent chieftaincy title on Yoruba activist Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, in a move already generating wide cultural and political attention.
Igboho is to be installed as Aare Akoni Oodua Worldwide, a title steeped in Yoruba history and symbolism, traditionally reserved for individuals recognised for bravery, sacrifice and defence of communal values.
Sources close to the palace say the decision reflects the monarch’s recognition of Igboho’s role during periods of heightened insecurity and growing agitation over the protection of Yoruba ancestral land and cultural identity.
In Yoruba tradition, Akoni denotes a valiant warrior or fearless defender. By extending the title to “Oodua Worldwide,” the Ooni is understood to be acknowledging Igboho’s influence beyond Nigeria, particularly among Yoruba communities in the diaspora.
Palace insiders cite Igboho’s courage, personal sacrifice and outspoken advocacy as key factors behind the honour, describing him as a figure who emerged as a strong voice for Yoruba unity at a time of widespread fear and uncertainty.

The installation is also seen as a symbolic bridge between traditional authority and grassroots activism, formally bringing a popular but controversial movement into the fold of cultural legitimacy.
Supporters of Igboho view the title as long-overdue validation of his sacrifices, while critics see it as a significant statement on the evolving relationship between traditional institutions and modern political expression.
The ceremony, expected to take place in Ile-Ife, is anticipated to draw national and international attention, marking a defining moment in the ongoing narrative of Yoruba identity, resilience and self-definition.
