ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- An All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Biodun Ajiboye, has played down the prospects of former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, posing as a serious challenge to President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election, insisting that Obi’s influence has waned since the 2023 polls.
Ajiboye stated this on Monday while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he argued that Obi no longer commands the level of grassroots support that propelled his performance in the last presidential election.
According to him, the former Labour Party presidential candidate has also lost the firm political grip he once enjoyed in the South-East, a region that overwhelmingly backed him in 2023.

The APC chieftain further dismissed speculation that an alliance between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar could threaten Tinubu’s re-election bid, noting that despite polling more than 12 million votes combined in 2023, both politicians would still fall short in 2027.
Ajiboye maintained that the political dynamics ahead of the next general election had shifted significantly, stressing that President Tinubu’s administration and party structure had strengthened their hold nationwide.
He added that opposition figures banking on past electoral performances were misreading the current political climate, insisting that 2027 would be decided by fresh realities rather than previous momentum.
Ajiboye’s comments come amid growing political manoeuvring and realignments as major parties and aspirants position themselves ahead of the next general election.
