ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Former Senator representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, Shehu Sani, has advocated stronger community-driven approaches to help curb insecurity in parts of the country.
Sani made the appeal on Saturday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja.
He stressed that local communities must build resilience and adopt collective resistance against recurring attacks by bandits and terrorists, noting that security agencies cannot be present everywhere at all times.
According to him, community vigilance should serve as a support to government efforts in tackling insecurity.

NAN reports that Sani, who is also a playwright, recently published two books titled “The Village and the Vigilante” and “The Councillor and the Perilous Path to Europe: The Sahara Odyssey.”
He decried the persistence of banditry and terrorism for more than a decade across several northern states, noting that the situation has led to mass kidnappings, the destruction of villages, and the displacement of millions of people.
Sani further raised concerns over the growing number of young Nigerians undertaking perilous journeys abroad, emphasising the need for sustained efforts to address insecurity.
He said many of those who leave the country through various routes are often exploited for prostitution, drug trafficking, and other criminal activities, while also enduring severe hardship.
“In Libya, some of them spend months or even years before being pushed across the Mediterranean under life-threatening conditions,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to pursue and develop their aspirations at home, stressing that success is achievable with determination.
“There is no dream for you to realise in Europe; Your dream can be realised here, in your own country,” he said.
