ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced that the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, will be laid to rest on January 30, 2026.

The governor made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting of the State Executive Council at the Government House in Yenagoa, where he also unveiled a four-day funeral programme approved by the state government, the family, and the church.

Diri explained that a funeral committee earlier constituted by the state government, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Nimibofa Ayawe, had concluded consultations with relevant stakeholders to finalise the burial arrangements.

“Today, January 14, we are using this opportunity to formally announce the burial programme of our departed deputy governor,” Diri said.

“At our last Executive Council meeting, I informed council of the constitution of the funeral committee, which has since met with the family and the church, and we are all in agreement on the programme.”

According to the governor, the funeral activities will commence on January 27 with sporting events in honour of the late Ewhrudjakpo, who supervised the Ministry of Sports during his lifetime.

A Day of Tributes will follow on January 28, while January 29 will feature special valedictory court sessions at the Bayelsa State High Court, as well as a farewell session by the State Executive Council at the Government House.

The final rites will take place on January 30, beginning with a Requiem Mass at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ofoni, after which the late deputy governor will be interred.

Governor Diri noted that the funeral programme was carefully drawn up by the committee and subsequently approved by him in line with state protocol.
