ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-Nigeria has been ranked as the fifth most proficient English-speaking country in Africa, according to the 2025 Education First English Proficiency Index.
The report, produced by global education firm EF, evaluated English proficiency in 123 countries and regions, drawing on results from 2.2 million test participants.
For the first time, this edition also assessed speaking and writing abilities, using artificial intelligence tools developed by EF’s education technology division.

English, which serves as Nigeria’s official language, continues to play a vital role in education, governance, the media, and business, contributing to the country’s strong performance. Across Africa, Nigeria ranks behind South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Zambia, which occupy the top positions.
The rankings highlight the increasing role of English as a key link for global communication, learning, and trade.
Top 10 English-Speaking Countries in Africa (EF EPI 2025):
South Africa – Widely used in government, education, media, and business.
Zimbabwe – English is the main language of instruction and administration.
Kenya – Official language alongside Swahili, commonly used in urban and professional environments.
Zambia – English is the official language and primary medium of instruction.
Nigeria – Official language, central to national communication and commerce.
Ghana – Used from basic to tertiary education and in public administration.
Uganda – Official language, important in trade, diplomacy, and professional settings.
Ethiopia – Widely used in education and international engagement, though not an official language.
Tunisia – Increasing adoption among young people and professionals in education, technology, and tourism.
Morocco – Growing use in schools and business to support global trade and international relations.
