LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Kaduna State Council of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), has dismissed claims circulating online that it plans to embark on a statewide strike, assuring residents that healthcare services will continue without disruption.
In a statement addressed to the Head of Service of Kaduna State, the union said it became aware of unverified social media reports alleging an imminent industrial action by its members.
The clarification, signed by Sani Saulawa on behalf of the state chairman, described the claims as false and misleading.
“The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna State Council, has no plan whatsoever to embark on any strike action in the state,” the statement said.
Beyond denying the rumours, the union praised the Kaduna State Government under Governor Uba Sani for policies it said have strengthened the health sector. According to MHWUN, recent interventions demonstrate a commitment to workers welfare and improved service delivery across public health facilities.
Notably, the union cited the approval and implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure for health workers, including those under the State Primary Health Care Board. It also highlighted the implementation of three years of outstanding promotions.
In addition, the statement pointed to the renovation and upgrading of 255 health facilities and general hospitals statewide, alongside the supply of essential medical equipment to primary healthcare centres. The provision of ambulances to general hospitals, aimed at improving referral services, was also listed among key achievements.

Recruitment efforts featured prominently in the union’s assessment. MHWUN noted the ongoing employment of 1,800 health professionals under the State Primary Health Care Board, adding that more than 90 percent of the board’s workforce are union members.
Given these developments, the union said there was no reason to disrupt industrial harmony.
“There is no justification or intention to disrupt industrial harmony through any form of strike,” the statement stressed.
While acknowledging that some demands remain unresolved, the union expressed confidence that the state government is aware of these issues and would address them within the year. It reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, cooperation and industrial peace, urging the public to disregard rumours of a planned strike.
The clarification comes against the backdrop of recent reports suggesting possible industrial action by another group within the health sector.
Last week, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Kaduna State Council, warned of a potential statewide strike in 2026 over concerns about stalled promotion exercises. The warning, reportedly issued in a New Year address by the council’s chairman, reflected frustrations over career progression rather than an immediate call to action.
For now, MHWUN’s position offers reassurance to patients and residents who rely on public healthcare services across Kaduna State.
