ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Troops of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), have uncovered a significant cache of high-calibre ammunition in the Bulumkutu Railway area of Borno State, authorities said on Saturday.
The Theatre Command’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said the recovery underscores the success of intelligence-driven security operations across the region.
“The recovery followed sustained follow-up actions after a cordon-and-search operation, conducted based on actionable intelligence aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action,” Lt. Col. Uba said, noting that several suicide bombers were neutralised or captured in the preceding week.
He explained that at approximately 3:00 p.m. on January 2, 2026, troops received a distress call about suspicious metallic objects inside a drainage channel in the Bulumkutu Railway area.

Troops, along with Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams, were immediately dispatched to the location.
“Upon arrival, a thorough search led to the discovery of 1,270 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, some live 12.7mm warheads, and power banks concealed inside the drainage,” the statement read.
Lt. Col. Uba said preliminary measures have been taken to secure the site, while efforts continue to drain the water in the channel to check for additional dangerous items.
“Troops, in conjunction with the Police and other security agencies, continue to dominate the general area to ensure residents’ safety, protect critical infrastructure, and prevent any attempt by criminal or terrorist elements to recover the items,” he added.
The officer further confirmed that no casualties or unusual incidents occurred during the operation, and that the general security situation remains calm, though vigilance is maintained due to the unpredictable threat environment.
