LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA) – The Nasarawa State Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, has announced a total ban on the burning of used tyres during crossover night activities marking the New Year across the state.
The fresh approach to New Year celebrations follows a decisive move by the police to curb a long-standing festive practice.
The directive, made public on Tuesday in Lafia, signals a tougher stance on safety and environmental concerns during the celebrations.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the commissioner has instructed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to enforce the ban without exception.
Security personnel have been placed on alert, with clear orders to arrest and prosecute anyone found violating the directive.

Mohammed explained that the decision was taken to protect public and private infrastructure from damage, reduce environmental pollution and guarantee the smooth flow of traffic throughout the festive period.
He noted that unchecked tyre burning poses risks to public safety and disrupts communal activities meant to usher in the New Year peacefully.
In a related move, vulcanisers across the state were advised to properly dispose of used tyres or remove them from their workshops at the close of business each day. The police believe this step will limit access to materials often used for unlawful acts during celebrations.
The commissioner also called on parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against burning tyres or engaging in activities that could lead to arrests during the festivities.
He concluded by reaffirming the Nasarawa State Police Command’s commitment to maintaining law, order and safety throughout the New Year celebrations, assuring residents of a calm and hitch-free transition into the year ahead.
