ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The United States Department of Homeland Security has unveiled a time-limited initiative designed to encourage undocumented migrants to leave the country voluntarily during the holiday period.
Under the programme, migrants who sign up to self-deport via the CBP Home app before the end of the year will receive a $3,000 allowance, along with a complimentary flight to their country of origin, the DHS announced in a statement on Monday.
Those who participate will also be eligible for a waiver of any civil fines or penalties linked to overstaying in the United States.
DHS disclosed that about 1.9 million undocumented migrants have voluntarily exited the country since January 2025, with tens of thousands making use of the CBP Home programme.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described the holiday offer as a temporary boost to the existing incentive.

“Since January 2025, 1.9 million illegal aliens have voluntarily self-deported, and tens of thousands have used the CBP Home programme.
“During the Christmas season, the US taxpayer is so generously tripling the incentive to leave voluntarily for those in this country illegally offering a $3,000 exit bonus, but just until the end of the year,” the statement read.
Noem also cautioned those who choose not to participate. “Illegal aliens should take advantage of this gift and self-deport because if they don’t, we will find them, we will arrest them, and they will never return,” she said.
The initiative, known as “Project Homecoming,” was launched in May 2025 through a presidential proclamation issued by former President Donald Trump.
Initially, the programme offered $1,000 and a free flight to migrants willing to self-deport.
Its funding is drawn from $250 million originally earmarked for refugee resettlement, which was reassigned by the State Department.
DHS said the CBP Home app provides a quick and cost-free process, requiring migrants to download the app and submit their details, after which the department organises and pays for their travel.
The agency further warned that those who decline to participate may face arrest, deportation , and permanent bans on re-entering the United States.
