ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over the uncertain political relationship between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi as the 2027 presidential race gathers momentum.
ADC spokesperson Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show on Friday, said the party is closely watching developments between the two opposition heavyweights, noting that their inability to align presents a political challenge.
Abdullahi, however, rejected the claim that the Atiku-Obi dynamic represents the “greatest threat” to Nigeria’s democracy.
“I won’t describe it in such extreme terms,” he said.

“But is it a conundrum? Yes. Is it a challenge? Yes. Is it something we are concerned about? Yes.”
He explained that while the issue is significant, the ADC is currently more focused on building its national structure and strengthening its capacity ahead of the 2027 polls.
According to him, the party is still working to consolidate its presence across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory before shifting attention to the selection of its presidential candidate.
Abdullahi hinted that the ADC might consider a consensus candidate when the time comes, but stressed that the race will remain open if such an arrangement fails.
“It’s not just about Atiku and Peter Obi,” he added. “There are other aspirants interested in running, and we must make room for them.”
He also revealed that the ADC has been holding talks with other political parties as part of efforts to build a stronger coalition ahead of the election cycle.
