LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Mechanical failure has been identified as the cause of the tragic accident involving newly elected Actors Guild of Nigeria president, Abubakar Yakubu.

The guild confirmed the development in a statement released by outgoing president Emeka Rollas, who addressed widespread reactions to the incident.

Rollas noted that “Yakubu cooperated fully with law enforcement and emergency responders as a law-abiding citizen.”

He disclosed that the crash stemmed from “unexpected mechanical brake failure” that claimed the life of a child and left the child’s mother injured and undergoing medical treatment.

Rollas added that the AGN president is “deeply shaken by the heartbreaking incident,” noting that the guild remains grateful for the grace shown by the bereaved family. He offered prayers for the departed child and for the mother’s full recovery.

Yakubu was arrested on Tuesday, 9 December 2025, after the accident in Surulere, less than 72 hours after he won the AGN presidency on 6 December, defeating actress Rita Daniels.

The guild says further details will emerge as investigations progress, while asking on behalf of the guild for privacy to help the affected parties heal and grief.
