ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to ensure the arrest and prosecution of all those responsible for recent attacks on Christian communities, describing the violence as intolerable and deeply alarming.

Meloni issued the statement on Friday via her official X (Twitter) account, condemning the renewed killings and urging Nigerian authorities to intensify security measures to safeguard religious minorities.

“We strongly condemn the renewed violence that took place today against Christian communities in Nigeria,” she wrote.

Emphasising that religious liberty is a fundamental right, she added: “We ask the Nigerian government to strengthen the protection of Christian communities and all religious communities and to prosecute those responsible for these heinous attacks.

‘Italy expresses all its closeness to the victims and to the communities in Nigeria who today feel in danger because of their religious beliefs.”

On the same day, United States President Donald Trump expressed outrage over what he described as the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

Speaking during a conservative radio programme with excerpts later shared by Fox News, Trump criticised the Nigerian government for failing to curb attacks allegedly carried out by Islamist extremists.

He insisted that unless Nigerian authorities “do more” to protect Christian communities, the US would escalate its response, including direct action against militants.
