LAGOS, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Former Governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade, has expressed disappointment over what he described as the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) unfair treatment toward him despite his loyalty and sacrifices for the party.
Speaking during a media interview, Ayade noted that he was the first governor from the South-South region to lead his state into the APC at a time when it was politically risky to do so. He said the decision came with personal and political costs that he continues to bear.
“I am carrying the scars of the battle for the sovereignty of the state,” he stated. “That scar has not healed. But I know President Bola Tinubu understands this very well. He knows Ayade very well.”

The former governor said his relationship with President Tinubu predates the latter’s rise to the presidency, describing him as “a smart leader” who values loyalty and would “positively surprise the country.”
Explaining his 2021 defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, Ayade said it was a calculated move based on foresight. “I could see tomorrow,” he said. “It was clear that Nigeria was heading into a phase where the opposition would have limited space. The crystal ball was clear.”
Despite his commitment, Ayade lamented that his efforts in consolidating the party’s influence in the South-South have not been adequately recognized.
“The APC has not treated me fairly,” he maintained. “But I remain hopeful that justice will come, and President Tinubu will recognize those who stood with him when it mattered.”
He, however, reaffirmed his confidence in the president’s leadership. “I believe that, despite all the narratives, President Tinubu will surprise this nation. He knows those who stood by him, and he will act wisely,” Ayade added.
