LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Global music legend Angélique Kidjo has issued a powerful reminder to her fellow artists, telling them to stay true to the people, not to politics.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Female Poets Society podcast, the Grammy-winning Beninese singer shared her firm stance against musicians using their art to promote politicians or political parties.
Kidjo emphasized that political power is fleeting and tying one’s music to it can make an artist’s relevance just as temporary.

“My father always used to say, especially to me as a singer, do not write music for any political party because they come and go. Once they’re gone, you go with them,” Kidjo said.
She urged musicians to guard their creative freedom and resist being co-opted by political agendas.
“Write your music with your opinions. Don’t be sold to somebody,” she advised, warning that artists who become “the voice of power” lose their connection to the people once the political tide turns.
Kidjo, known for her fearless advocacy and timeless artistry, continues to use her platform to inspire authenticity in the global music scene, advising artists that while regimes may fade, honest art endures.
