LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has confirmed the destruction of over 80 containers of fake and substandard medicines and food items as part of a nationwide enforcement drive to protect public health.
NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement and Chairman of the Federal Task Force, Dr. Martins Iluyomade, disclosed the operation during a press briefing in Lagos on Saturday.
He highlighted the recent attack on NAFDAC officials at the Trade Fair Market, emphasizing the risks enforcement teams face in combating the illicit trade.
“The moral decadence in Nigeria is alarming, and many benefit from this illegal trade. We will continue to mop up these markets to reduce substandard products to the barest minimum,” Iluyomade said.

During the raid, about ₦25 billion worth of operational vehicles were vandalized, underlining the dangers of tackling the illicit market.
NAFDAC praised the joint effort with Customs for the seizure and handover of counterfeit containers and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerian consumers from harmful medicines and unsafe food products.
The agency assured the public that enforcement operations will continue nationwide, emphasizing that safeguarding health and safety remains its top priority.
“We are committed to ensuring that Nigerians can trust the medicines and food they consume,” Iluyomade concluded.
