ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Amupitan, a professor of Law, was confirmed by the upper legislative chamber after a rigorous screening session on Thursday.
The confirmation followed more than two hours of questioning by senators, who engaged him extensively on how he intends to restore credibility to Nigeria’s electoral process and implement meaningful reforms within the commission.

The 58-year-old legal scholar was nominated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and formally endorsed by the National Council of State last week.
With his confirmation, Amupitan becomes the sixth substantive Chairman of INEC, succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who officially concluded his tenure as the electoral body’s head.
