ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- A group of Igbo businessmen based in the United States has expressed concern over the planned “Free Nnamdi Kanu Now” protest, slated for October 20, warning that the demonstration could negatively affect the ongoing trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
The protest, according to reports, was initiated by Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 elections, and recently gained the backing of former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
In a statement issued on Tuesday under the aegis of Njiko Amaka, and jointly signed by Chiefs Emeka Ejidike and Okey Anosike, the group said it was worried about the political undertones surrounding the planned protest.

“They urged Nigerians to reflect on the timing and possible implications of such a public action while Kanu’s trial is ongoing.
The statement read in part: “We are concerned that the timing of this protest may inadvertently affect the progress of Kanu’s trial. Well-meaning Nigerians should carefully consider all factors before participating or lending support.”
The group also called on citizens to explore legal and constructive avenues to support a fair judicial process for Kanu, stressing that elected Igbo leaders are already working to address the matter responsibly.
“We encourage all parties to prioritize the rule of law and avoid actions that could complicate the ongoing judicial process,” the statement added.
Njiko Amaka further emphasized that governors, legislators, and other elected Igbo leaders are actively involved in ongoing efforts to ensure that justice is pursued within lawful and peaceful frameworks.
