LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Oscar-winning actress whose eccentric charm and iconic roles defined decades of American cinema, Diane Keaton, has died at the age of 79.
Keaton passed away in California, and her death was confirmed by longtime friend and producer Dori Rath.
The trailblazing actress leaves behind a legacy spanning over 50 years in film, marked by unforgettable performances and her signature menswear-inspired wardrobe and wide-brimmed hats that made her a beloved iconic figure on and off screen.
Born in Los Angeles, Keaton rose to prominence in the 1970s portraying Kay Adams-Corleone in The Godfather trilogy, a role that cemented her place in cinematic history.
Her career soared further with her critically acclaimed performance in one of the most influential romantic comedies of all time,
‘Annie Hall’ (1977), which earned her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for Best Actress.
Throughout her prolific career, Keaton captivated audiences with her comedic timing and distinct voice. She was also nominated for three additional Oscars for her work in Reds, Marvin’s Room, and Something’s Gotta Give.

Behind the camera, Keaton also made her mark as a director with the 1987 documentary Heaven and the acclaimed 1995 drama Unstrung Heroes, which was selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section. Her final directorial effort, Hanging Up (2000), starred herself alongside Lisa Kudrow and Meg Ryan.
Her final acting credit came in the 2024 comedy Summer Camp, where she starred opposite Eugene Levy and Kathy Bates.
Keaton never married, but adopted two children, Dexter and Duke, whom she frequently spoke about with deep affection.
In her 2011 memoir Then Again, Keaton reflected on motherhood and family with these words, “I just don’t think anyone could possibly have the same wonderful, intense, compelling feelings that I have for this family of mine.”
Hollywood is shocked beyond words. First Wives Club co-star Bette Midler expresses her grief, writing “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. She was hilarious, a complete original… What you saw was who she was.”
Also, actor Ben Stiller called her “one of the greatest film actors ever… An icon of style, humor, and comedy. Brilliant. What a person.”
