LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)- Renowned gospel singer and pastor Nathaniel Bassey has opened up about the emotional pain he and his wife, Sarah, endured behind the scenes of his globally followed Hallelujah Challenge.
In a rare and deeply personal revelation, Bassey shared that his wife suffered five miscarriages, including an ectopic pregnancy, even as he continued to lead the live midnight worship sessions.
The emotional testimony came during the October 2025 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, a 25-day praise movement running from October 7 to 31.
“My wife will have to forgive me. Do you know there were times during the Hallelujah Challenge when we had a miscarriage, and nobody knew? I would still come online to praise and dance,” Bassey said.

Despite his role as a worship leader ministering to thousands nightly, Bassey revealed that he was also quietly rushing back and forth to the hospital, where his wife was being treated during the crises.
“A few years ago, she was in the hospital with an ectopic pregnancy. I would leave, lead praise and worship online, then return to the hospital. The nurses would tell me, ‘It was powerful tonight’,” he added.
The Olowogbogboro singer emphasized the hidden struggles that many spiritual leaders face, sharing that he had walked through intense personal storms even while appearing strong for others.
“Not one, not two, not three or four pregnancies, but five,” he added, highlighting the depth of the private pain they carried for years.
Nathaniel Bassey, who has been married to Sarah since 2013, used the moment to encourage others not to assume spiritual leaders are exempt from suffering, explaining that grace is what strengthens one to worship in the midst of personal trials.
