LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-Actress Laide Bakare has stirred intense online debate after proudly revealing she was the first to introduce her 17-year-old daughter to alcohol and nightlife.

In a candid interview with content creator Mr. Lilgaga, the Nollywood star opened up about her unconventional parenting decision, stating it was a deliberate move to shape her daughter’s perception of the outside world.

“I took my daughter to the club for the first time at 17. And I like the fact that in her memory, she would reference me as the person who introduced her to alcohol and clubbing,” Bakare said during the interview.

Bakare explained that her daughter had been a disciplined and academically focused teenager with limited exposure to nightlife.

According to the actress, she wanted to be the one to guide her daughter through that experience before she encountered it independently.

The revelation quickly ignited controversy online, with critics slamming her approach as reckless and inappropriate. Detractors questioned her judgment and expressed concern over glamorizing alcohol use at a young age.

Still, some observers came to her defense, suggesting that Bakare’s upbringing and personal experiences may have shaped her parenting choices.

Known for living a sheltered youth and enduring multiple heartbreaks, supporters argued that she may be encouraging her daughter to embrace life differently than she did.

Bakare’s early rise in Nollywood also shaped her worldview. The actress got her start in the industry while still in university, producing her first film during her freshman year at the University of Ibadan.

She credits her exposure to movie sets at her family’s hotel and home for fueling her passion for entertainment.

Bakare remains unapologetic, standing firm in her belief that guidance, not restriction is key to preparing teens for adulthood.
