LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-In a harrowing reminder of the unseen toll of war, a Russian drone strike ignited a massive blaze at a Ukrainian pig farm, killing approximately 13,000 pigs overnight.
The attack, which took place in the Novovodolazka community of the Kharkiv region, marks one of the deadliest assaults on animals since the war began.
According to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, the animals were housed in eight interconnected stalls spanning over 140,000 square feet. The facility was engulfed in flames after the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strike, reducing the shelter to a smoldering wreck.

Graphic images released by officials showed charred remains of pigs amid the twisted ruins of partially collapsed sheds. One farm worker was also injured in the attack.
This incident is the latest in a troubling pattern of strikes on animal facilities. In September, a Russian missile attack killed seven horses at an equestrian club in the Kyiv region. Just months earlier, a ram was fatally wounded during a strike on Odesa Zoo.
From rural farms to city zoos, animals in Ukraine have become silent victims of ongoing violence, often overlooked in mainstream headlines.
The scale of this latest tragedy has reignited calls from animal welfare organizations to recognize and respond to the impact of armed conflict on animal lives. While global attention often centers on human casualties and geopolitical consequences, the suffering of animals trapped in war zones remains a critical yet underreported issue.
