ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)-The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned what it described as a “death threat” issued by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, against 2027 presidential aspirant, Peter Obi.
Governor Okpebholo had warned the Labour Party figure against entering Edo State without notifying or obtaining permission from him, a position CUPP says contradicts constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of movement.
This is the second time Peter Obi has received such a caution from an All Progressives Congress (APC)-led state.
A similar warning reportedly came earlier from Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia.
Speaking on Obi’s potential visit, Governor Okpebholo was quoted as saying:
“If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.”

He alleged that Obi’s previous visit to the state during which the former Anambra governor donated N15 million to a nursing school sparked unrest in Benin City, reportedly resulting in fatalities.
Reacting in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, the CUPP described the governor’s remarks as an affront to Nigeria’s democratic values.
“Okpebholo’s recorded remarks, warning Obi not to ‘dare’ enter Edo State without his permission and stating that his security ‘is not guaranteed,’ constitute a veiled death threat against a law-abiding citizen exercising his constitutional rights,” the statement said.
The opposition coalition urged political leaders, civil society groups, and democracy activists to denounce what it called a blatant display of intimidation and political thuggery.
“His only offense is traveling across the country to support hospitals, schools, nurses, and IDPs at their points of need. Should a governor fear acts of charity?” CUPP asked.
“Governor Monday Okpebholo’s threat against Peter Obi is a disgraceful act that strikes at the heart of Nigeria’s democracy. It is a direct assault on the constitutional rights to freedom of movement, expression, and association, and it reflects a dangerous arrogance that has no place in governance.
“This incident must serve as a wake-up call for Nigerians to defend their constitutional protections and demand accountability from those in power.
“The rule of law must prevail, and no individual, no matter their position, should be allowed to trample on the rights of citizens. Edo State and Nigeria deserve better than this shameful display of leadership.”
