ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ned Nwoko, has opposed the call for a fresh constitution to replace Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, stating that the current legal framework remains a “working document” capable of guiding the country’s governance if properly amended.
Nwoko expressed his stance during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, July 18, 2025, amid growing calls from civil society groups and some political leaders for the drafting of a new constitution to address Nigeria’s structural and governance issues.
“Personally, I do not subscribe to the idea that we should throw away the current constitution and create an entirely new one” Nwoko said.
“It’s a workable document, and it has been guiding what we are doing in Nigeria so far.”

While acknowledging the imperfections of the 1999 Constitution, the lawmaker argued that it could be refined through targeted amendments rather than an outright replacement.
He added: “There cannot be any perfect constitution anywhere in the world.
“All you can do is propose amendments and hope that those amendments go through so that whatever the wishes of the people are can be reflected.”
Nwoko’s remarks counter the renewed agitation for a brand-new constitution, a move some proponents believe is necessary to overhaul Nigeria’s political and administrative structures.
