ENUGU, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- In commemoration of the 2025 World Environment Day (WED), the Enugu State Chapter of the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES) in collaboration with National Environmental Standards And Regulations Enforcement Agency ( NESREA) joined the global community to raise awareness of plastic pollution, which it described as one of the planet’s most pressing issues.
Held annually on June 5, World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
The 2025 theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” echoes an urgent call for collective action to reduce, reuse, and rethink the use of plastics, especially single-use plastics that have become a serious threat to ecosystems, public health, and urban sanitation.
To mark the occasion, NES Enugu organized a street walk and public sensitization exercise that brought together environmentalists, volunteers, and concerned citizens.
The walk commenced at 10:00 am from the stadium gate by Ogui Road.

Participants, dressed in green T-shirts or white T-shirts and black trousers or skirts, marched through key commercial hubs including Artizan Market, New Haven Market, the cellphone market in New Haven, and concluded at Shoprite.
The street walk attracted attention from traders, motorists, and pedestrians as participants shared informative flyers and engaged the public in conversations about the harmful effects of plastic waste and the importance of sustainable alternatives.
They warned the public against dangers of plastic pollution, and also hinted them on community roles in environmental protection, as well as practical steps individuals and businesses can take to reduce plastic dependency.
Speaking on the importance of the event, Prof. Ignatius A. Madu, Chairman of the NES Enugu State Chapter, emphasized the need for urgent environmental action.
“This year’s celebration is not just about marking a date but about taking real steps to save our environment. Plastic pollution is everywhere from our drains to our farmlands. It is time we act,” he said.

Also speaking at the terminal point, shoprite, Dr. Ikenna Ezeasor, the chairman the Local organizing committee reemphasaised on the need to act now to save our environment.
