ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- At the 3rd Session of the 7th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Badagry, held on Sunday, the Bishop of the Diocese, Cathedral Church of St. Thomas, Badagry, Lagos State, Rt. Rev. Babatunde Adeyemi, called for the direct disbursement of funds under the Nigeria Education Loan Fund to student beneficiaries.
He emphasized that such an approach would promote greater transparency and accountability in the management of the scheme.
The Synod, themed “Pass It On: The Imperative of Sharing The Praiseworthy Deeds, Power and Wonders of the Lord With The Next Generation”, provided a platform for the bishop to express concerns regarding the implementation of the student loan programme.
Referencing the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2024 signed into law by President Bola Tinubu on April 3 Adeyemi highlighted the importance of ensuring that the initiative truly benefits students.

“We want the government to look into the students’ loans, in a way to make life comfortable for the students who collect them,” he said.
“I don’t think disbursements should go through the schools; rather, they should go through the students who are collecting the loans. This will also enable the government to know who will be responsible for the repayment in the years to come.”
The bishop also recommended that parents be involved in the process, noting their role in ensuring the success of the scheme.
He praised the initiative, stating it had helped ease the financial strain on students and their families.
