ABUJA, Nigeria (VOICE OF NAIJA)- Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has revealed that the establishment of the University of Agriculture, Science and Technology in Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area, was part of his administration’s strategic efforts to expand access to higher education across the state.
Speaking in Makurdi on Thursday during a broadcast to mark his second year in office, Alia emphasized that the institution was founded to produce specialised graduates capable of driving economic growth in the state.
He explained that the move was aimed at engaging the youth in agriculture to bolster food security, noting that the university would play a critical role in achieving that goal.
Reaffirming his commitment to education, the governor stated that the sector remains central to his developmental priorities.
He disclosed that “for the first time in the history of Benue State, we have recruited over 9,000 qualified teachers through a transparent Computer-Based Testing process.”
He added that the government had “approved a new N75,000 minimum wage for public school teachers and for all state civil servants, reflecting our respect for their essential role in public service.”

Highlighting infrastructural upgrades in the education sector, Alia noted that “infrastructural development in our schools includes the massive construction of new classrooms, libraries, sanitation facilities, and perimeter fences.”
He also announced the introduction of “computer-based learning in model schools like the UBEC Smart School in Makurdi, with many more to follow.”
According to the governor, more than 253 school buildings have been constructed or renovated, including modern multi-storey blocks, while over 13,347 units of classroom furniture have been distributed, with provisions for Early Childhood Care and Development Education.
In collaboration with the Federal Government, the state has also launched a fashion hub and ICT training centre in Makurdi.
Alia said the project aims to tap into the creativity of young people, promote ICT and fashion entrepreneurship, and establish Benue as a hub for digital and textile innovation in Nigeria.
On security, Alia said his administration inherited a fragile situation in 2023 but has taken decisive steps to restore peace.
He cited the creation of “Operation Anyam Nyôr, a security outfit backed by legislation,” which he said has enhanced the capabilities of law enforcement in addressing insecurity.
“We have distributed Hilux vans, security vehicles and motorcycles to various mainstream security agencies and quasi-security outfits for effective combating of crime,” he said.
The governor assured residents that his government is intensifying efforts to eliminate criminal elements.
“Let me assure you that we are on the trail of the terrorists, armed herders and bandits terrorising some parts of our state, and very soon, we will decimate them and all other criminal syndicates in the state,” he added.
