LAGOS, Nigeria(VOICE OF NAIJA)-Fast-rising Nigerian singer Ayo Maff has opened up about leaving home at the age of 16 to chase a better life for his family.
In a recent interview with Hip TV, the 19-year-old artist reflected on his early struggles growing up in the Shomolu area of Lagos, describing the experience as both “hard, fun, and exciting.”
“As the first child of my family, I left home at 16 because it was not easy in there. I looked around and realised I had to go out and make it for these people. I wanted more for my family,” he said.

Fueled by determination, Ayo Maff revealed that his decision wasn’t driven by rebellion. Instead, he stayed with a friend for over a year while relentlessly pursuing his music aspirations.
“My mum was concerned when I was leaving, but I assured her that I would be coming to check on them,” he added.
Having gained musical recognition in 2023 with the release of his hit single “Dealer”, featuring Fireboy DML, he credits his Shomolu upbringing for shaping his perspective and music.
“Without living in Shomolu, I wouldn’t have the experiences of singing about them. I wouldn’t have truly seen the reality of life that shaped me,” Ayo Maff concluded.
